Over the past few months, I’ve read 5 books on the topic of DEI and I wanted to create a brief summary of what I’ve learned. It’s my intention to write a more in-depth analysis in the future but to help retain what I’ve learned I’m writing a quick bit.
As a note, I’m quite new to the topic of DEI. I was raised in a very closed-minded community in northern Wisconsin where these things were not taught or discussed, so I’m working on educating myself now that I’ve become aware of my lack of knowledge. I would not consider any of my takeaways from this book as “expert” or “thought leader” level by any means and would encourage you to read these books yourself because they are highly educational.
What is DEI
For those unaware of what DEI means here is a quick summary before we start. DEI stands for Diversity Equity and Inclusion. Generally speaking, DEI efforts focus on building diversity of a group (which leads to a diversity of thought), fair treatment of all employees, and helping make sure that everyone in the company is learning how to create a comprehensively inclusive environment not leaving anyone out. It’s a very important topic to learn about in order to build a company that is truly up to par with the times, but more importantly because it’s the right thing to do. With that, let’s get into the post.
