Week 1 of my Apprenticeship.
For the next six months, I will be recapping what I learned in the past week both at work and in life. This will serve as a way to track my progress and growth and will offer me a tangible piece of work for me to look back on. Maybe one day I can show it to my kids and who knows…maybe we’ll laugh at my use of three dots…
What I’m learning…
At work…
Communication is extremely important, and there is a difference between communicating tasks and just communicating.
As I’ve had time to get to know my boss I’ve learned that he is not the most concise person. Which is okay of course. He has a zeal for stories so you have to give him a break.
What I have learned to do is to clarify exactly what he wants after all of our conversations. This takes a bit longer but it is what I have to do in order to make sure I’m not doing work that does not advance us towards the most important thing. This is vital for our company. We have so many tasks to accomplish and deadlines to meet that we cannot spare the time for mistakes.
Another thing I have done is to convince my boss to start using Slack. It is difficult to get him to adopt new technology but this is all part of the excitement of working for a young company.
