MyMBA Lessons + Looking Forward

Over the past 8 weeks, I’ve gone through a program called MyMBA. It’s an alternative education program founded by a Twitter friend of mine, Grant Nissly. The program helps professionals level up their careers and professional direction. Many people join to pivot careers. Some join to gain business acumen in order to launch a business. I joined because I wanted to restart my habit of weekly writing and to build a network in areas that I don’t normally spin.

This week I’m reflecting on what I’ve learned over these past 8 weeks and what I’m planning on doing going forward based on those learnings.

Lessons:

Check Your Blind Spots: On a daily basis, I offer career advice from the hundreds of CVs that I’ve seen. But the main reason my advice is helpful is not that I’ve seen many CVs, it’s that I’m a third party looking at the situation with a fresh set of eyes. I’m not steeped in the daily reflections and bouts of self-doubt. I’m just listening with genuine interest to help. During MyMBA, I’ve had many conversations where I’m asked about my career goals. Every time, I’d preface with, “I’m actually not looking to change jobs. I love what I do and I’m on a good track to accomplish what I want in the long term already”.
