My Resolution to Live in the Moment

Silas Mähner

--

Over the past two years, I’ve spent a lot of time traveling back and forth between New York, Wisconsin, and now Florida. I was spending often a few weeks at least in Wisconsin with longer times in NY and then a long-ish time of two months in Florida.

Just this weekend, I packed my car up to drive back from Sarasota, FL to Nashville, where I’ll stay a week, and then I’ll be back in Wisconsin the following weekend. I’ve been in Sarasota for 2 months, built a semblance of a routine, made a few friends, and deepened relationships with co-workers. But it’s all closing and I’m full of mixed feelings.

What set it off for me was seeing the cashier fellow at Trader Joe’s on my last day in Sarasota. I realized I’d seen the fellow probably 5 times in the past month and while I have no meaningful relationship with him, I’ll likely never see him again. This led me to realize that there are several people like this in my life who I don’t recall. It also led me to feel a bit of sadness for leaving even though I want to be closer to family.

This thought process has led me to resolve to live in the present more. Since I will likely be spending several weeks or months in places at a time over the coming years, I’ll need to really live in the moment and truly enjoy the company of those around me.

I challenge you to do this as well. Would love to hear how this goes for you and what those of you who have experienced this have done about it in the past?
