I’ve spent many hours considering what my central interest in my life and career is. Recently it’s been on my mind a lot because of how fulfilling my current role at NextWave is.
The Rough Draft:
The first time I thought deeply about my career path was in high school. I grew up, a homeschooled Wisconsin country boy, working for my dad in his cabinet shop. Until that point, the plan was always to take over my dad’s business. This was the first time I truly thought independently about what I wanted to do.
I settled on wanting to run my own business building homes. I had really enjoyed helping build the house my parents still live in, from 2007 to 2009. I always wanted to build things and to run my own business, ever since I was little.
Draft Two:
Immediately after graduating high school, I started my first official job (outside of working for my dad) as the groundskeeper at my church. This was foundational because my boss became a very important mentor to me. He had started a business with $300 in the past and sold it for a very handsome sum of money in the early 90s. He taught me basic principles of business and professionalism. Possibly most of all, he taught me confidence.
